China has ambitious plans to develop civil aircraft manufacturing. Eventually the aim is to challenge Boeing and Airbus, the dominant Western plane makers. The first step is a small regional jet - the ARJ-21, also known as the Flying Phoenix - designed to take 90 passengers on short and medium length journeys.
It's the first Chinese designed and manufactured commercial jet. And in a little piece of history it's now made its maiden test flight from an airport near Shanghai. Chinese media reports said the flight went extremely well, although for safety reasons the aircraft wasn't allowed to fly more than 900 meters, about 3,000 feet, above the ground.
It's due to go into service within 18 months. The main market will be Chinese airlines operating routes within China, but earlier this month the plane got its first foreign order. The American industrial giant General Electric is buying five of the jets for its aircraft leasing arm, with an option to buy 20 more later.
Friday's test flight took place more than six months later than originally planned after reports of problems with components provided by outside suppliers.

The smaller shayla Hijab is worn over jilbabs and jalabiyas in a matching or contrasting manner. There are several such examples available in the Hijab world.
There is a Hijab rumour that goes around once in a while that wearing a Hijab cause’s loss of hair. This is very untrue as the Hijab does not cause any loss of hair what so ever.
The Hijab can be worn in several colours and can be exciting to try several Hijab colours. The world of the Hijab can spice up anybody’s life after a person realises the value of modesty a Hijab creates. Wear the Hijab. The Hijab is the way forward in life.

The Indian navy is describing the boat it has sunk as a pirate mother ship. It says the Indian naval ship INS Tabar was on patrol in the Gulf of Aden late on Tuesday evening when it encountered what it believed was a pirate ship with two speedboats in tow.

Now the internet search engine Google has come up with a tool designed to register search requests for common phrases such as "flu symptoms" or "muscles aches".
The idea is to map clusters of influenza in the United States in order to track the spread of the disease. There are also plans to roll out the system in other countries around the world.
The new web tracker known as "Google Flu Trends" could act as an early warning system for internet users: if there are a lot of flu cases in your area, then you could take preventative measures such as have a flu jab. Early tests of the new web tool show it can detect regional outbreaks up to ten days earlier than the US health authorities.
A senior health expert from the United Nations told the BBC, Google Flu Trends would have to prove its reliability over time. But he added it could be very useful in nations where health authorities don't have a reliable database of infectious diseases.

The figures from Italy show that Europe's fourth largest economy is now officially in recession after two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The Italian economy shrank by half a percent in the third quarter, after posting a nought point three percent fall in the previous quarter
The Spanish government also reported its first negative growth in fifteen years.
But France bucked the trend of gloomy news today: they defied economic forecasts and narrowly escaped recession by announcing minimal growth for the period between July and September.

EU's new deal with Russia

Ten weeks after the EU made clear its concern over Georgia by delaying talks on a new deal with Russia, most countries in the bloc seem ready to go back to the negotiating table. Britain and Sweden, two of Moscow's most vocal critics, argued this didn't amount to turning the page on the conflict in Georgia. The British foreign secretary David Miliband said the issues covered by the new agreement - including energy, trade and human rights - would be in the EU's interests as well as Russia's.
MILIBAND:I think that in the context of the global economic crisis, which has demonstrated Russia's vulnerabilities rather than its strengths, there is a new possibility of ensuring that EU unity is able to engage properly with Russia and engage in a way that respects our interests and our principles and values. I think that's the right way of going about it because in the end isolating Russia is not a good option for us. Far better to engage, but in a systematic and hard-headed way.
That's not the view of Lithuania, backed by Poland. They insist that Russia has failed to keep its commitments and shouldn't be rewarded. But under EU rules, they don't have a veto on talks that were simply postponed, not suspended. If the foreign ministers give a green light today, talks on the new agreement could resume in time for the EU-Russia summit in Nice later this week. For despite the shadow cast by the conflict in Georgia, Russia remains the EU's biggest energy supplier and its third largest trading partner, while the EU is the biggest investor in Russia.

Horse owners hit by downturn

Shelagh isn't alone. Horse charities say record numbers are struggling to pay the bills. First came huge rises in costs - the price of feed doubled. Now there is less money around to pay for it all, and that's hitting businesses too. Garron Baines had already given up one horse through sickness. Now he's shutting down his horse-trekking company, meaning six more need new homes.
GARRON BAINES:The horse business, or the horse leisure riding has fallen off the cliff in the last few weeks as people have looked at their household budgets and decided that it's too expensive to go horse-riding. And at the same time costs have been mounting significantly over the last year.
It all means more work for those who care for unwanted animals. But charities fear this is only the beginning and that donations may begin to dry up just as huge numbers of horses need their help.

Managing such expectations abroad, as well as at home, will clearly be one of Mr Obama's biggest challenges.
